"Let Earth Breathe," came from one of the most pivotal experiences of my life: creating a school garden while working as a credentialed chemistry teacher.

The garden space at Cesar Chavez Learning Academies became an ecosystem oasis. Developing a close relationship with the natural world through the garden introduced me to Meditation. To me, meditation used to mean “sit down and close your eyes and don’t talk.” At the school garden, observing the purple freckles on a tender lettuce leaf was enough to keep me present. These moments filled my brain with so much curiosity that there was no room for other thoughts to enter. This was meditation.

These experiences with nature, meditation and food filled everyone with joy. Through the years, I created curricula that integrated the school garden into the courses I happened to be teaching at the moment, such as “environmental technology,” “plant and soil,” “chemistry,” and “food education.” With a limited amount of resources, I developed a program that helped students and educators improve their overall health. After six years of service to the garden, I decided to step out of the school and make this joyful experience available to my community.
